09.24.22 - Rest, Recover & Wander
Good morning and HAPPY SATURDAY.
There is a legitimate “brain dump” of links & assets at the end of this that I think you will enjoy — so read all the way through (as you should be, anyways).
I should charge for this newsletter, but I don’t and I won’t.
My only request is that you share it with people, IF you’re receiving value. That will make my day. Let’s dive in.
When it comes to ENERGY, there are two primary “states” I go into…
You are probably the same:
➡️ “Get shit done and conquer.”
➡️ “Rest, recover & wander.”
One of the things I’ve learned to do (and am always IMPROVING at) is the simple act of noticing which state I am in…
Problems with self-worth, confidence, ‘worthiness,’ etc — often stem from not knowing which place/state/season you are in and trying to force change.
For instance, days that I am NEEDING a “rest, recover & wander” but my intellect says “No, we are going to get shit done & conquer.” These days are usually bad.
They create misalignment…
I end up being “half productive,” instead of one or the other.
[By the way, this piece was originally published here in the Wealthy Consultant resource group. It’s free to join by going here]
Then, there are seasons when I have “planned” to rest, recover & wander but my mind/body has so much energy, and so many ideas. It’s easier to put them to paper, push them out to the world, get shit done and move on.
It would be harder, in that moment, to “force” myself to rest when working is more fun and more appropriate.
The key to all of this comes down to one thing:
Being APPROPRIATE for the moment you are in.
There are times for discipline. Yes 100%. There are times to say “No, this is what needs to be done and I’m tired of not being who I need to be.”
But I’m talking to a high performer right now… I’m guessing most of you don’t need encouraged on how to work more or work harder or work longer — what you ACTUALLY need is permission to rest. To come off the mountain for 5 seconds…
You will be shocked at what happens to your creativity when you give yourself time to THINK. Time to rest. Time to wander aimlessly for 24 hours without an “action plan.”
PEAK Productivity (which is being recorded / presented live next month — hop into ARENA to get first access to it live) talks about this “cadence” because it’s one of the most fundamental elements of SUSTAINABLE performance.
Anybody can teach you how to “get more done.”
Very few can teach you how to get the RIGHT amount of things done and keep going for 20 years because you’re HAPPY while getting it done. My job is not just to help you win but to help you win for a long time. To do that, you have to have the energy to stay in the game.
For practicality’s sake, here are a few thoughts on this subject:
✅ I typically loosely plan my days around how I think I will feel.
✅ Two days a week are scheduled to be later mornings — I still get up early if I feel like it (I usually do) but I don’t have anything planned right away… so I can wander
✅ Weekends are almost always carved out for rest, recover & wander… reading, hanging with my family, doing “nothing.” You should try this.
✅ Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays I can get a LOT done — Tuesdays & Fridays are usually there for buffer.
✅ The most important part: all of this can change, and it likely will — because nothing lasts forever and the mind/body crave variety as much as they need routine.
The biggest success hack I can give you if you’re a high performer is this:
Be cool.
Know that some days you will be off the charts productive, hypomanic, and prolific to the point of deity.
And other days, you’ll need to sit and ponder life for a good bit. Read a book (here’s a good one). Write some notes. And otherwise “waste time,” because that’s where the raw ingredients for everything else are asssembled.
Either way go all in… moment to moment.
Hope this is helpful and THANK you for being here. Love you guys…

P.S. Here are some things I’m reading, pondering, and looking at this weekend.
MarketMovers — my news curation & investment service… our Friday updates (here’s a link) cover blockchain and emerging technologies. Good newsletter to be subscribed to.
Category Pirates — you have to subscribe / pay for the most premium content. But they’re very smart, and I enjoy reading their viewpoints on the world. Here’s a link to an article I’m reading now.
Richie Norton sent me a copy of his new book, “Anti-Time Management.” It is very good. Very good - read it.
Series of Richard Koch interviews (wrote “The 80/20 Principle,” here are my notes on the book)… as interviewed by Perry Marshall. Perry is a brilliant mind, so is Richard. You will enjoy this series.
An insightful thread by Codie Sanchez. While I’ve never met her personally, a few of my friends have - and her content vouches for itself. If you would ever entertain selling your company, read this.
By the way, if you sell “consulting,” or coaching OR information — it’s best to start with the end in mind as you’re setting it up. You don’t exit “info” brands the same way you do e-commerce or brick/mortar. Read through the “Phases” here and, when you’re ready to make irreversible progress forward (the right direction, the right way), let us know.
"Be cool." I like that. Sometimes it's hard to step away from work, since I can work anywhere with an internet connection at this point.
Great post as always.
