I require a LOT of “maintenance.”
I write daily, read daily, loosely meditate 4 times a week, plenty of exercise, end of day and early morning rituals, etc etc.
These are all “loose” routines.
When I first started my routines, they were iron clad. I felt that I could not afford to NOT do them. But as I grew, I realized these routines were for me.
I invented them to serve me.
I didn’t invent them to “have to” serve them.
I’ve never met or studied someone worthy of study who didn’t have a loose “outline” or routine for various areas of their lives.
However — I’ve found that the mind will in most cases, constantly fight the idea of ritual, routine, or adherence UNTIL it becomes habit.
Once it’s habit, the mind and body LOVE to adhere. Before the habit is formed, it is a game of self discipline.
The most chaotic seasons of my life have been the seasons where I’m enforcing NEW habits / rituals and my mind simply does not want to do them.
It goes like this:
You decide to level up a certain area
Excitedly, you create new environments/circumstances/schedules/plans etc to achieve in that area
Three days in all hell breaks loose
Your mind goes, “See I don’t have time for this.” Your body goes “No I don’t want to wake up this early.”
You acquiesce…
Then a month later, the cycle continues at step 1.
Here’s why this is important: NONE OF THE CHAOS IS REAL.
It just “feels” real — because your system is trying to undo the commitment and revert back to comfortable.
I’ve found that if I can make it about a month, things settle down and I feel less chaotic.
To the outside world, nothing’s really changed. It was all the field of the mind… felt real to ME, but majority of it manufactured.
This is why your environment plays a big role.
When you rock up and start rolling with people who are at your level or just beyond it, mirror neurons kick in and it’s harder for the facade of busy / chaos to hurt you.
Discipline is our ability to commit to a FUTURE state or target, MORE than we are committing to current comfort / familiarity.
Pretty simple.
Happy Friday.
Let’s win the day.
