Good At Consulting: Introduction
What this book is about, and why I wrote it
I am writing a new book. It should be done very soon.
As an experiment, I am going to be publishing chapters (as they are edited & ready for publishing) here on the site. When it is complete, you will have all chapters hosted online and I will likely leave it here for free consumption.
Some links may be inactive until the final chapter is written.
“Don’t join an easy crowd; you won’t grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform are high.” – Jim Rohn
Our greatest contributions to the world around us are made during our happiest, and most blissful, moments of existence.
Therefore we have a moral obligation — a DUTY — to engineer these moments as frequently & routinely as we can.
This is obviously not the way you’d expect the introduction to go for a book about consulting. After all, the “rating system” for whether this book is a success or not is simply: did it help you achieve the outcome you wanted? And if that’s the rating system, wouldn’t it make sense to go straight to the point tackling tactics, hardcore working strategies & “plug & play” templates?
If I were a less mature, less seasoned version of myself, that’s how I would start it. But I’m writing to you on the back of over 4,000 individual clients, some 150,000+ customers, and 8 years in the trenches with some of the largest & most successful consulting firms in the world…
There are actually forms of success that you are after. Let me codify them for you, briefly, before we get into the meat & potatoes of the book.
EXTERNAL SUCCESS IS ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE
Everybody starts here — and it’s important, I’ll give you that. It would be hypocritical of me to say it is not important. The day I took my very first consulting client (September, 2015), something shifted in me because I saw the power of the model.
I didn’t know what I know now, of course, nor did I have any clue just how powerful the model could be… but I was capable of enough vision to understand and to have the thought, “This is the easiest money I’ve ever made in my life.” There were no laborious services attached to it, no deep and lengthy “fulfillment” processes. My responsibility to my very first client was the same as my responsibility to my 4,000th client: teach them & advise them to engineer the results they don’t know how to engineer.
Notice, this applies universally to any industry (not just “how to make money” but how to lose weight how to have kids how to be a great spouse etc etc).
The thought that followed my first client was then, immediately followed by the idea that I could have anything I could dream of — if I learned how to master the model. I’m not embarrassed by this. You’re most likely similar in that your main motivators are to take care of yourself, and your family, and to advance. Some will read this and assume that this means we only care about advancement at all costs — and that is okay, that simply means they don’t know how to read because that’s not what I am saying.
What I am saying is very simple: we are all driven by a level of external success and there is nothing wrong with that.
Yet, somewhere around the sixty million mark (I’ve generated over 9-figures for myself and north of half-a-billion dollars for my clients) I started to wonder, “Is this all there is? What’s next?”
This led me down a path of discovery. Eventually I discovered that there is another form of success that is equally important, if not more important, to the first.
INTERNAL SUCCESS IS ABOUT WHO YOU ARE
You wake up, check the numbers… it’s a Thursday, the 17th of the month
Your companies have generated $2.2 million MTD, trending for your best month ever
Your team is happy, healthy, and large (enabling you to take over markets without even being involved)
When you read the numbers, you should be ecstatic, but you’re depressed
You know the math should be telling you that you’ve “made it,” but you know you haven’t
You feel like you’re further behind than when you started
So-and-so just bought a plane, you’re working too much, miss your kids, etc
“Why am I pushing this hard if this is what it feels like?”
My reality matched the description above… I am grateful that I paused to take notice. Most people live years (or decades) this way and never know it until something catastrophic happens. They lose a marriage, file bankruptcy, etcetera.
I was blessed with the gift of self-awareness and it came in handy during this time of my life.
Here is an important distinction: this place I ended up had nothing to do with how much money I was making and everything to do with how I felt about myself…
My external success was full of advancement and accolades. My internal success was dreadfully behind and I was not becoming a better version of myself each day. If you are to succeed over the course of history (aka longer than 6 months) you are going to need to pay equal measure to the internal side of things, as well as the external trappings of wealth.
There are many who can train you in the simple art of making more money. There are very few who can adequately train you to maintain your internal advancement while doing it. If you earn more than you are capable of holding, you will lose it and start over.
In this book we’re going to talk about my unique style of consulting. We’ll also talk about my unique style of living. Fortunately, it is impossible to truly separate your business from your identity when it comes to how you live your life. I’ve often said, “People don’t have business problems. They have LIFE problems that show up in their business.”
The best way for me to multiply & enhance your business, is to multiply and enhance your humanity. If this sounds too “woo woo” for you, well you are not going to like me very much. And that’s okay. What you will do is profit handsomely if you take my words seriously and hopefully by the time we’re through, you’ll see the validity to my point.
If I give you an 8-figure upgrade but the cost of implementation is your family, I am a crook. That is a horrible trade no matter how you look at it. If I add $100M to your bank account but you lose your health, I have induced failure and should not be listened to.
The obligation I have is one of “both/and.” We are going to make plenty of money, but money in an account is only one form of treasure. There are many treasures we should aim to protect in the process.
This book comes with several advantages that you should absolutely participate in if you have the time. I will list them here…
A discounted subscription to the “Consulting Memo” (my monthly training letter that expands upon the concepts in this book with real time marketing-data, experimentation & private case studies; use coupon code “BOOKMEMO” to activate discount)

As always, it is my sincerest hope that my work creates value for you. Real value. I create because I have exceeded my wildest imaginations already. I have nothing left to prove and nothing left to try and accomplish. It’s all bonus territory from here.
